10 Free iPad Apps for Teachers:  Version 2012

The iPad can be a great tool for teachers and students.  I believe that the following apps are especially valuable to educators. In the comment section of this page, please add your favorite iPad app and how you use it.

ShowMe
Turn your iPad into your personal interactive whiteboard! ShowMe allows you to record voice-over whiteboard tutorials and share them online. It’s an intuitive app that anyone will find extremely easy to use, regardless of age or background.

iBooks
iBooks is an easy way to download and read books. iBooks includes the iBookstore, where you can download the latest bestselling books or your favorite classics – day or night. Browse your library on a beautiful bookshelf, tap a book to open it, flip through pages with a swipe or a tap, and bookmark or add notes to your favorite passages. 

iTunes U
The iTunes U app gives you access to complete courses from leading universities and other schools — plus the world’s largest digital catalog of free education content — right on your iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch. Whether you’re majoring in molecular biology at a university, taking Spanish in high school, or just interested in European history, you now have a valuable tool to help you learn anytime, anywhere.

History Maps of the World
History:Maps of World is a fun and educational collection of high-resolution historical maps. Check it out to keep up with your history, learn something about history.
 
3D Brain
Rotate and zoom around 29 interactive structures. Discover how each brain region functions, what happens when it is injured, and how it is involved in mental illness. Each detailed structure comes with information on functions, disorders, brain damage, case studies, and links to modern research

Science360 for iPad
The National Science Foundation's (NSF) Science360 for iPad provides easy access to engaging science and engineering images and video from around the globe and a news feed featuring breaking news from NSF-funded institutions. Content is either produced by NSF or gathered from scientists, colleges and universities, and NSF science and engineering centers.

Songify
Songify for iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch can turn your spoken words into a catchy melody -- you don't even have to carry a tune, as the app does it all for you. 

Flashcardlet
Flashcardlet is a free, easy-to-use studying application with material for any class or standardized test. You can also create and share your own. It is the best way to study on any iOS device.

CorkBoardMe
Corkboard.me is a simple and handy webapp that creates a virtual corkboard of sticky notes. Changes are saved to your personal, auto-generated URL, letting you share your corkboard with anyone.

EarthQuake Lite
Track and follow earthquakes from around the world in real time from several Geo data sources.  It is easy to sort the list by magnitude, location or time.  Also, a direct link to Google Map to view location.

Rover Spy Tank
The Rover Spy Tank is app-controlled via your iPod touch® (2nd, 3rd and 4th generation), iPhone® device, or iPad® tablet. It generates its own Wi-Fi wireless connection for your smart device (no frequency interference). The impressive wireless range lets it travel up to 200 ft. unobstructed, up to 100 ft. around walls into other rooms. Navigate it with the on-screen driving arrows or use the G-Drive Mode that uses your device’s accelerometer like a steering wheel in your hands.

Virtual Manipulatives!
Free- Set the app for Percents, fractions or decimals- App provides you with a slide bar. Drag pieces such as 1/5 press and hold and you are provided with the equivalent. App includes an area for student work and a folder to save work.

Audioboo
Audioboo is an application for recording and sharing your voice with the world. This free version allows you to create audio up to 3 minutes in length and post that to your own account on the web. You can add titles, tags, geolocation info and a photo to the recording before you upload it and we'll save all that with the file. The audio can then be shared with your followers or via Facebook, Twitter & more social networks by managing your account at http://audioboo.fm.
